Training & Behaviour
Observations Of A Dog Trainer
Some great observations from a very experienced dog trainer:
“I encounter various challenges that can be frustrating when seeing many owners and their dogs. However, each of these moments also presents a valuable opportunity for learning and improvement. Here are five common annoyances and how I positively address them
Unsolicited Advice: It’s common for other people to offer advice about how to handle your dog, especially in public settings. While well-intentioned, this can sometimes be based on outdated or incorrect information. Positive Spin: Use these moments to politely share knowledge and perhaps educate others about modern, science-based training methods.
Off-Lead Dogs in Lead-Only Areas: Encountering off-lead dogs in areas where leashes are required can be disruptive and potentially dangerous. Positive Spin: This is a chance to practice strong recall and emergency focus drills with your dog, enhancing their ability to stay connected under distraction.
Distractions During Training Sessions: Whether it’s sudden noises, other dogs, or curious bystanders, distractions can complicate training sessions. Positive Spin: View these interruptions as real-world scenarios to strengthen your dog’s training under varied conditions, enhancing their adaptability.
Misinterpretation of Dog Behaviour: Sometimes, people misread a dog’s friendly approach or cautious demeanor as aggression or unfriendliness. Positive Spin: This offers an opportunity to educate others about dog body language and promote better understanding and safer interactions between dogs and people.
Lack of Consistency in Training: Seeing other guardians not maintaining consistent sessions or boundaries for their dogs can be frustrating, especially when it impacts your own dog’s behaviour. Positive Spin: Focus on reinforcing your own training methods and boundaries, which strengthens the bond and reliability between you and your dog.
Reactivity
Reactive Dogs And How To Manage Their Behaviour
Ever heard the term 'reactive dog' and wondered what it truly means? It’s a common phrase that often conjures images of a dog barking, lunging, or growling. But let’s dig a little deeper into what 'reactive' really signifies.
'Reactive' simply means 'to respond to a stimulus.' It's a neutral term that describes a dog's response to their environment. This reaction could be due to fear, frustration, or even overexcitement—each triggering a similar chemical response in their body.
Why It Matters:
Understanding that reactivity isn't inherently aggressive or problematic is key. An overexcited dog jumping up to greet someone might not seem similar to a dog growling out of fear, but fundamentally, their emotional states are quite similar. Both are experiencing high levels of stress hormones, which drive their behaviours.
Recognising this, we can approach training with a more informed perspective. Whether a dog is reacting out of joy, fear, or frustration, the goal is to teach them how to manage their emotions and react in more appropriate ways. The training techniques used to calm an overexcited dog are surprisingly similar to those used to soothe a fearful one.
So, next time you see a 'reactive' dog, remember that their behaviour is just a response to their emotions and environment. With patience and proper training, reactive dogs can learn to handle their responses better, leading to calmer and happier lives.
It’s vital to remember that if your dog reacts by barking, lunging, or growling, it isn’t their fault. These behaviours are often instinctual responses to fear, anxiety, or overexcitement, triggered by their environment or experiences. Blaming a dog for reacting naturally to what they perceive as threats does not help them or address the underlying issues.
While reactivity isn't a fault, how we respond to and help our dogs is our responsibility. As guardians, it’s up to us to provide the guidance and training they need to manage their reactions constructively.
This means:
Understanding the triggers and body language associated with reactivity.
Working with professional trainers or behaviourists who use positive reinforcement techniques.
Implementing and maintaining a training regimen that addresses reactivity, helping our dogs learn and practice better ways to cope with their emotions.

Healthy Homemade Dog Recipes: Simple and Nutritious Meals for Your Dog
Healthy Home Made Food
Feeding your dog a healthy diet is essential for their well-being. While commercial dog foods are convenient, homemade meals offer a way to control exactly what your dog is eating, ensuring they get wholesome, fresh ingredients. Here are three easy-to-make, nutritious recipes that will keep your dog happy and healthy.
1. Chicken and Sweet Potato Delight
This recipe is rich in protein and fiber, making it great for active dogs.
Ingredients:
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast
1 large sweet potato, peeled and diced
1/2 cup peas (frozen or fresh)
1/2 cup carrots, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions:
Boil the chicken breast in water until fully cooked, about 15-20 minutes. Remove and let it cool, then dice it into small pieces.
In the same pot, boil the sweet potato until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain and set aside.
In a pan, heat the olive oil and sauté the peas and carrots until softened, about 5 minutes.
Combine the chicken, sweet potato, peas, and carrots in a large bowl, mixing well.
Let the mixture cool before serving to your dog. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to three days.
Nutritional Benefits: Chicken provides lean protein essential for muscle development, sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber and vitamins, while peas and carrots offer antioxidants and additional nutrients.

Ingredients:
1 pound lean ground beef

1/2 cup pumpkin puree (unsweetened)
1 tablespoon fish oil (optional for extra omega-3)
Instructions:
Cook the brown rice according to package instructions and set aside.
In a large pan, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
Add the chopped spinach to the pan with the beef and cook until wilted, about 2-3 minutes.
Mix in the cooked rice and pumpkin puree until well combined. Optionally, drizzle with fish oil for added omega-3s.
Allow the mixture to cool before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
Nutritional Benefits: Beef is a good source of high-quality protein and essential fatty acids, brown rice provides complex carbohydrates for sustained energy, and pumpkin aids in digestion.

The Benefits of Tug Toys for Dogs
Tug toys are a staple in many dog households, and for good reason. These versatile toys offer a range of benefits for dogs of all ages, from physical exercise to mental stimulation, and even training aids. Whether you're a new dog owner or a seasoned pro, understanding the advantages of tug toys can help you make informed decisions about your dog's playtime activities.
Physical Exercise
One of the most obvious benefits of tug toys is the physical exercise they provide. Engaging in a game of tug-of-war allows dogs to burn off excess energy in a controlled and fun manner. This is particularly beneficial for high-energy breeds like Border Collies or Labrador Retrievers, who need regular, vigorous exercise to stay happy and healthy. Tug toys can help build strength and endurance in your dog's muscles, particularly the jaw, neck, and shoulders, contributing to overall physical fitness.
Mental Stimulation
Tug toys aren't just about physical play; they also offer significant mental stimulation. The interactive nature of tug-of-war requires dogs to focus, strategize, and react quickly. This mental engagement can help alleviate boredom, reduce anxiety, and prevent destructive behaviors that often stem from a lack of mental stimulation. For dogs that tend to get into trouble when left to their own devices, regular tugging sessions can be a great way to keep their minds sharp and occupied.
Strengthening the Bond Between Dog and Owner
Playing tug-of-war with your dog is an excellent way to strengthen the bond between you. The game is interactive and requires you to be fully engaged with your dog, which can help build trust and reinforce your role as a leader in a positive, non-threatening way. Many dog trainers recommend using tug as a reward during training sessions, as it combines play with positive reinforcement, making learning fun for the dog.
Training and Behavior Management
Tug toys can also be invaluable tools in training and behavior management. For example, you can use a tug toy to teach your dog commands like "drop it" or "take it." These commands are not only useful in play but can also be lifesaving in situations where your dog picks up something dangerous. Moreover, tug games can be used to teach impulse control, as your dog must learn to wait for your cue before engaging in play.
Dental Health
Many tug toys are designed with dental health in mind. Toys made from materials like rope or rubber can help clean your dog's teeth as they chew and tug, reducing plaque and tartar buildup. Some tug toys even come with textured surfaces that provide a gentle massage to the gums, promoting better oral health overall.
Types of Tug Toys Available
There is a wide variety of tug toys on the market, catering to different dog sizes, chewing strengths, and play styles. Here are a few popular types:
Rope Tug Toys: These are classic tug toys, usually made of durable cotton or nylon rope. They often feature knotted ends, which provide extra grip for both the dog and the owner. Rope toys are great for dogs who love to chew, as the fibers can help clean their teeth.
Rubber Tug Toys: Made from durable rubber, these toys are designed to withstand heavy chewing. Some rubber tug toys are designed with handles on both ends, making them easy to grip during play. They are ideal for powerful chewers who might quickly destroy a rope toy.
Interactive Tug Toys: These toys are designed for solo or interactive play and may include features like squeakers or built-in treats. They are excellent for keeping dogs engaged and entertained, especially when their human companions aren't available to play.
Bungee Tug Toys: These toys feature an elastic component, adding an extra layer of challenge and fun to the game. The bungee action adds resistance, which can be particularly appealing to dogs who love a vigorous game of tug.
Conclusion
Incorporating tug toys into your dog's routine can offer numerous benefits, from physical and mental exercise to stronger bonds and better training outcomes. With a wide variety of tug toys available, there's something to suit every dog's needs and preferences. So, whether you're using a simple rope toy or a high-tech interactive tug, you're not just playing a game—you're enhancing your dog's well-being in multiple ways.
